Balloons and Blue Shark off Cork

Last Monday I had the pleasure of joining John Mellerick from Dublin and Myles Kelly of Inland Fisheries Ireland down in Cork for some shark fishing. The Anglers View Media team were hoping to get some good footage with hopefully a shark landed.

We set out from Cobh on Jim Linehan’s charter boat, Deora De in search of some Blue Shark and fetched up about 15miles offshore.

Conditions were good, warm and a breeze to keep the boat drifting. A couple of hours trailing bags of fish offal, blood and oil we hoped would create the right conditions to attract some shark.

It worked a treat and over the next 4 hours we hooked 6 sharks and landed 2.

Drifting over 90m of water, we fished mackerel baits using balloon’s as floats. Myles landed a blue shark just about 40lb and John landed one of just under 30lb. Angler View Media’s own Charlie Stuart was also very unlucky to lose a decent blue shark during the day. [slideshow gallery_id=”8″]

We also had some great sport, float fishing mackerel strips for Garfish in the fish offal slick. All the sharks were measured, tagged and returned unharmed.

Special thanks to Mike Hennessy of Inland Fisheries Ireland for setting the day up. Check out IFI report on http://fishinginireland.info/news/sea-reports
