Up and down the Country – Never a dull moment

Bit of a varied last 10 days. Had an outing on Derg about 10 days ago. Got a few fish to dry Mayfly but the evening was a bit too cold for it to really come on. Tried to get out on Corrib and Mask last Saturday week but there was a a big blow and dangerous. We got out following day on Corrib. While it was rough we managed to get some fishing in. There was a small hatch of Mayfly and we had 3 good trout on dry fly and missed a few others.

Got to spend time in Cork filming some exceptional coarse fishing for IFI. Well known UK match angler Dave Coster, now with Hardy & Greys and Gary Newman, Anglers Mail journalist, were over trying out permit lake Carrigadrohid on the River Lee for a few days and we caught up with them last Thursday. What an experience seeing these pair in action. Skill, accuracy and massive intensity for hours saw them take lots of roach, bream and plenty of hybrids and some good sized fish too.

The weekend just gone saw the end of IFI Fisheries Awareness Week and we were up on the Boyne again with Navan & District Anglers for ‘Have a Go’ family day. A day of activities including talks on selecting and matching fly fishing tackle, water safety and rules of fly casting was followed by instruction and demonstration on various fly casting methods and some actual fishing. We filmed some of the local anglers dry fly fishing with some trout caught on Mayflies up to 1lb. Thanks to David Byrne from Navan & District Anglers for arranging all of this. rj
